Safehaven Social — Lesbian 101

6 August 2002

Presenters — Carol, Jean and Peggy

Facilitator — Chris

In the Beginning...

I was thinking real hard about what to write the minute Kenneth called me for a write-up on Les 101. Tough, cos there seemed so much to talk about yet I just didn't know how to begin! Much the same sentiment when Jason Wee came up to me on the Les 101 idea ... how to begin!

But frankly, I was honored that Jason gave the girls a chance to start off the series of SH non-bible sessions. What's more — something to talk about ourselves! [Thought it was easy initially...]

Then, Clarence threw us into doubt with a bugging question 'Why would gay guys be interested in something that is (literally speaking) none of their business?' 'How are we gonna promote our night?' Dah, a daunting question... The only way out — a pestering reminder posted on SH.

Let's Just Do It, Baby!

But really, thanks to all the (sisterly) brothers in the SH committee who gave us much support from the start by posing us questions (which eventually became our topics of the night). We worked on them as well as the quiz questions on the night of our getaway. It was through the process of discussion that we found out that there was so much to share and so much to learn even among ourselves. There was never one answer to a question for we all had very different and individualistic experiences and views. It was an enriching yet challenging experience for us all when we decided to be frank, open (and educational) for our session.

Bring the House Down!

The night came when we were all bewildered by the turnout — a house full of our brothers (overflowing to the study apparently)! And more bewildered when we realized how the guys simply dropped their jaws at Carol's informative input and well-illustrated diagrams of the female organ and sexual positions. That led on to an intellectual discussion led by Jean, on issues like the (can/ T-shirt) labels and the ever controversy on nature vs nurture of lesbianism/ bisexuality. Some brothers were at awe on Peggy's demo on how lesbian safe sex practices turned out to be dental dams and condoms. Yes, no hush, hush about it, man! And a few brothers asked for Carol's wonderfully illustrated diagrams after the session (for educating their younger brothers?)

Heartfelt Thanks

Thanks to all the brothers attending. They certainly helped to keep the 1-hour session alive with their questions and occasional witty comments. A night of great interaction, openness and simply getting to know all!

Special thanks to Clarence & Jason for your ideas and support! Thanks also to Sister Sam, Ken, Andrew and all for your questions and support! ;)
